Treating ALS With Orthomolecular Medicine

June 29, 2019
| dentist, health, medicine

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gherig’s Disease is a degenerative disease where neurons die early due to a problem with the autoimmune system. Your immune system attacks its organs and nervous system. The muscles degenerate and the body may begin wasting. This occurs because ALS destroys the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. The brain looses its ability to control its muscles.

It is very important to understand that there may be a viral component to this disease. The body must be supported with adaptogenic botanicals to handle the possible viral component. These adaptogens include astragulus, ashwaganda, gotu kola, siberian ginseng, panax ginseng, and other botanical products found in Quantum Orthomolecular Medicine. The use of adaptogens may not have the desired effect for the patient that has a genetically acquired disease. If a family member has the disease, these adaptogenic herbs may not produce the desired outcome.

Treating and healing ALS with ordinary amino acids and botanicals is the basis for Orthomolecular Medicine. Large doses of naturally found proteins called amino acids stop the attack on the brain and repair its malfunction. These amino acids and botanicals are affordable and are used in therapeutic doses much larger than those levels normally found in food. The concept of orthomolecular medicine is based upon the use of very large doses of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or botanical extracts for the cellular repair and enhancement of normal brain activities.

The ALS patient should be given a three week parasite cleanse with one of the many herbal parasite cleanses that are available at your local health food store. This patient should be treated for heavy metals toxins with oral chelation for a period up to five weeks. You can consider extending the oral chelation if for another two weeks if the patient improves under this treatment. This patient should be treated very conservatively and any treatment where the patient does not improve should be discontinued.

This patient may be a good candidate for adrenal or thyroid glandular support. You may try an organic product and closely monitor the progress. Chinese patent herbs would be very good for this patient and they might delay the progression of this disease by several years.

Lymphatic therapy or massage therapy would be a good addition to the overall patient care. This should be tried once or twice a week. Reflexology can also benefit ALS.

This progressive and degenerative disease can be treated with Orthomolecular Medicine and this may be a curable disease. Conventional medicine does not believe that this disease can be healed. The onset of some symptoms may be delayed or kept at bay with very aggressive use of IV amino acids, vitamins, and minerals along with oral orthomolecular medicine two to four times per day. There are several key amino acids for the amino acid therapy and they include NAC, Threonine, glutamine, methionine, and tryptophan. Glutamine and NAC are very valuable tools to fight progressive and degenerative neurological diseases.

It is very important to …

Quick Tips to Help Parents Identify the Lumps, Bumps, and Owies in Their Child’s Mouth

June 29, 2019
| dentist, health

Geez, oral health care can be tough! How do you know what’s normal and what isn’t inside a kid’s mouth? Here are a few quick tips to identify the lumps, bumps, and owies. If in doubt, you can always call your friendly pediatric dentist.

Normal stuff: Normal oral anatomy is usually midline or symmetrical. That little bump behind the front top teeth is called an incisal papilla, if burned on pizza or poked with a chip it can get inflamed but will quickly heal. Those bright red spots under the tongue are surface blood vessels called varices, they’re fine Mom!

Cold Sores: Common cold sores usually occur outside the mouth on the lips. They are a recurrence of a viral infection called Herpes Simplex. About 90% of children are exposed to the herpes cold sore virus by age four (look what I brought home from preschool Mom!), and about 50% become chronic carriers. That means, since the herpes virus infects nerve cells that never die, periodically the virus will reappear to form a cold sore. Before a cold sore has crusted over, it sheds virus and in very infective. Luckily a whole family of antiviral medicines can treat the cold sore to limit its size, duration and discomfort.

Canker Sores: For otherwise healthy children, canker sores occur on the inside of the mouth on the moveable tissues only. Also named Aphthous ulcers or RAS (recurrent aphthous syndrome), they have a white, dished center with a bright red border and are very painful when touched. Oftentimes, parents confuse this lesion for an abscess if located near the teeth on the gums. In reality, Aphthous ulcers are caused by an over exuberant immune system response. That’s right, the immune system gets mad at some micro trauma, cleans house, and leaves a painful ulcer. Since it’s not an infection, the best treatment is recognizing it will go away in about a week and medicating with Tylenol or a topical numbing agent like Orajel. Some adults remember burning them with Silver Nitrate. That’s very painful, will leave a scar, and cause mutiny!

Mucocele: Unknown to most of us, the lips are full of minor salivary glands, consisting of a simple small gland connect to the oral cavity by a tube duct. Every so often, one of these tubes gets cut, saliva builds up in the gland and a soft bump in the lip occurs. If the gland ruptures, fills again and ruptures again, a scar may form. This produces a hard bump. Kids can absolutely not leave these bumps alone and usually chew on them; some mucoceles can reach the size of marbles! The best treatment is to simply make a small incision in the inside lip and tease the mucocele out. In a pediatric dentist office, this involves a spot of anesthesia, one stitch and about five minutes. At your oral surgeon or ENT office they start talking about general anesthesia! Remember, children can smell when a doctor is scarred of them!

Health Benefits of Desert Living

June 29, 2019
| dentist, health

Not only is desert living a leisured and less expensive alternative to city life, it has some amazing health benefits too. Here is just a few examples of what desert life can do for you.

Air Quality

According to an environmental analysis of the Anza Borrego State Park and it’s surrounding area, “due to its remoteness” the “air quality in the Park is often good and is not necessarily characteristic of the air quality in the San Diego Basin.” Pollution has been linked with a slew of pulmonary diseases and is known to increase the risk of asthma attack and respiratory allergies. High air pollution also increases the development of asthma and respiratory diseases in children. Yes, there really is nothing like taking a breath of fresh air.

Sunshine

Probably one of the greatest benefits of sunshine is the production of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is critical for maintaining skeletal calcium and immune system health. It is thought that the high rates of cold and flu viruses in the winter months stems from a lack of Vitamin D production. Vitamin D deficiency is also attributed to depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), often called the ‘winter blues,’ caused by a lack of sunshine. It is suggested that in regions with little sunshine for long stretches of time, that citizens invest in expensive UV lamps to simulate sunlight.

Dry Weather

Not only does a humid afternoon leave us feeling awful, it also can breed dangerous molds and mildews in the wet winter months. Drier weather can also decrease the occurrence of lung infections and arthritis aches and pains. Not to mention that hot dry environments promote sweat production, allowing the body to release unwanted toxins and bacteria.

Quiet, Peaceful Environment

Perhaps one of the best things of all is the tranquility of living in nature. Being relatively isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city helps to bring a peace of mind to the body and soul and works wonders for reducing stress. Since chronic stress has been known to cause health issues such as heart disease, sleeping disorders, depression, digestive problems, obesity and autoimmune diseases, it stands to show that we could all use a little peace and quiet.

Hiking

Ok, so hiking it’s something unique to the desert environment, but it is something that it has in spades. Being an aerobic exercise, it is important and helpful for cardiovascular health, maintaining bone density, reducing stress, and weight maintenance. Not to mention, it has entertainment value along with health value. There is always something new and different to see and experience on the trail. Don’t forget about our great places to hike at Butterfield Ranch Resort.…

How Should I Brush My Teeth?

June 28, 2019
| dentist, health

Sounds like a pretty basic question for a dentist, does not it? In fact, I'm not really asked that question often because "everyone knows" you should brush your teeth twice a day. But should you really?

After all, you can pick up almost any tube of toothpaste and it says right there "brush twice daily, or as directed by your dentist".

Some time ago, I started asking patients how often they brushed their teeth when they came in for their periodic cleanings. The most common answer – by far – is "twice a day." My next question is usually, "Yes, but when during the day do you brush?" As you read this, many of you who do brush twice daily are thinking "when I get up and again before I go to bed."

If you have experienced dental cavities, that could be part of the problem.

When I mention this to patients I usually get this sort of silent stare. It's kind of a cross between, "well that makes no sense at all" or, "then I might as well just give up."

Let me explain.

It starts with an understanding of what causes dental cavities. There are a few basic elements. The most obvious is that you need to have a tooth. Additionally, you need cavity-causing bacteria. Then you also need a fermentable carbohydrate. This is an important point. Carbohydrates include sugars and starches, but the process of fermentation creates acids. Once the pains form, there is another element that comes into play: time.

If we break these factors down further, it is useful to look at what we can control in the cavity-causing process. For the sake of argument, let's assume we are starting out with a full set of teeth, so that's not entirely in our control. Next, there is the factor of cavity-causing bacteria. We all have both good and bad bacteria in our mouths. While I could get into a discussion of promoting the good and suppressing the bad, this is also not always easily controlled.

The next two factors, however, we have a great deal of control over.

We can control what we eat. Recognition of which foods are acid forming is also useful. But I'm a realist and understand that sometimes we are just going to eat (or drink) those things anyway.

And this is where the time factor comes in.

A little analogy may be helpful here. What would you do if you spilled a strong acid on your bare skin? Chances are you would run right over to the nearest sink and try to wash it off. But what if you had a leather jacket on and did not notice right away? First of all, you would end up with a hole in your jacket, but ever – with time – it would reach your skin and start to hurt.

It's much the same with teeth. Your enamel is a protective layer that does not have any feeling because it is mostly …

Red Yeast Rice For Lowering Cholesterol Similar to Statins

June 28, 2019
| dentist, health, medicine

The following article concerning red rice yeast simply states the facts relating this product. Moderation is the key and consulting your physician is also extremely important.

There is no doubt that yeast reduces cholesterol levels. Used in China as a food and medicine for thousands of years, red yeast rice is the fermented product of the fungus, Monascus purpureus, grown on rice. It was first marketed as a dietary supplement in the United States by Pharmanex under the trade name Cholestin.

The reason for its cholesterol reducing qualities is that the chemical structure found in red yeast rice contains an active ingredient called monocolin K, which is the same as one of the popular statin drugs (lovastatin). Statins are currently the most effective cholesterol-lowering agents used in medicine today.

A number of clinical trials have clearly illustrated the effectiveness in using red yeast rice preparations for reducing cholesterol levels in patients with high cholesterol levels.Tests of several preparations of red rice yeast revealed that many contained citrinin, a toxic fermentation by-product. People with recorded liver disease, pregnant women and persons under the age of eighteen should not use red yeast rice.

In fact, when red rice yeast was found to contain the basis of one of the statin drugs, the FDA decided to take action in order to classify red rice yeast a drug, and then remove it from the unregulated shelves of the health food store. However, the FDA ruling on red rice yeast was overturned by the court of the District of Utah, and as a result, red rice yeast can be purchased over the counter in completely unregulated quantities in the form of dietary supplements.

We advise caution with any kind of dietary supplements, as manufacturers of supplements are free to make whatever claims they choose about their products, obviously without needing scientific support. Moreover they are not obliged to guarantee the purity and the quantities that are claimed on their labels.

Statins are effective cholesterol-lowering agent, and as a consequence red rice yeast really does seem to lower cholesterol levels. However, statins are prescription drugs, used by cardiologists, with potentially serious side effects which can include muscle or liver damage. …

New Energy Medicine and Cancer

June 27, 2019
| health, medicine

Einstein, a genius scientist of the 20th century, and central to the new energy physics, stated that ‘a problem cannot be solved by the same mind set that created it’. Cancer is a case in point. Cancer is a dis-ease that stems partly from the products of the mechanistic, anthropomorphic and exploitative philosophy at the heart of our culture, which we tend to ignore. Its effective treatment demands that we see ourselves in a different way and act accordingly.

Medicine is extremely slow to move from a mechanistic and physical philosophy to a more energetic model, like the Gaian paradigm that values all life forms as connected. A philosophy of medicine that is over-reliant on logic and limited mainly to drugs and surgery is fundamental flawed. Acts of logic always rely on analysis, that is breaking down a ‘whole’ into its constituent parts, and examining each minutely. Reductionist approaches fail to see the connectivity and relatedness of all things. As a result this philosophy is offering us ‘cures’ to cancer that are often as dangerous and destructive as the disease itself.

Nobel prize-winner Carlo Rubbia maintains that only a billionth of the world is actually made of matter and the rest is made of energy. The new sciences are challenging the way we perceive the world and as a result the way we relate to our bodies. Dr. K. Scott-Mumby is author of Virtual Medicine and an allergy specialist in the UK writes:

“Science is proving that we exist as regulated and informed energy. Disease can now be redefined as a disruption, cessation or distortion in the information and energy fields. Its time for medical practitioners to join the party”.

Classical science has reached the end of what it can explain in reductionist terms. Issues such as whether light is a particle or a wave, or whether or not water has a memory (an issue central to the ‘proof’ of homeopathy), are moving modern science to a quantum level that deals with fields of energy. Medical science is still stuck in a very physical universe, where the objective is to ‘excise the lump’ almost regardless of where it came from and individual conditions of the patient and their experiences.

New sciences such as the chaos theories point a way forward into handling the complexities of whole systems that work together, in synergy. Unfortunately our medical systems and practises are still too often based on philosophy formulated in medieval times.

Because all interventions in a medical process have to been ‘proven’ as workable (using scientific double-blind testing methods) before doctors will recognise their validity (if they then do the research), medical science mostly marginalises or ignores healing alternatives that can provide only ‘anecdotal evidence’. Multiple simultaneous treatments of different types and ‘levels’ tuned for one patient are un-testable by a reductionist philosophy and therefore ignored by mainstream medicine. In addition to this regulatory pressures force researchers and companies to test their drugs on patients with advanced cancer – when the dis-ease …

Herbal Remedies – Ancient Wisdom Now Tested By Science

June 26, 2019
| dentist, health, medicine

Herbal remedies have been known to man for thousands of years, right from early civilization, though it is impossible to put a date on their discovery. The oldest records of herbs being used as medicines date as far back as 2800 BC; these records were discovered in China.

It is well known that people belonging to Persia, India, China, Egypt and even the Red Indians (America) used herbal extracts to treat the ailing members of their community. Scientists also have evidence that animals, especially apes, know about the medicinal properties of some plants and therefore, scientists reason that herbs could have been used as medicine even before the first human evolved on our planet.

After humans discovered the medical values of plants, herbal medicine became part of folklore and it spread by word of mouth and other antiquated means of communication through the centuries. In the 15th century, the printing press was invented, which helped in spreading the popularity of herbal medicine – herbal medicine recipes were printed on paper and passed around; naturally, they caught on like wildfire. By the 17th century herbal medicine was all over the place. Then allopathic medicines caught on and proponents of the allopathic chain of thought rubbished herbal medicine and claimed that it was too weak as compared to the stronger and effective allopathic medicines.

In 1985 the World Health Organization (WHO) was of the view that herbal medicines are an important constituent of health-care. Even today, debate rages on over the efficacy of herbal medicines. Here are a few herbs which natural healing properties have been scientifically validated:

Ephedrine was an early asthma drug that was derived from the herb, Ephedra.

The plant Meadowsweet contains salicyclic acid and polyphenols – salicyclic is related to aspirin and polyphenols protect the stomach.

St. John's Wort is known to be effective in treating depression.

The plant, Echinacea, has been proven to be effective in boosting the immune system.

Garlic is recognized for its effective cholesterol-lowering qualities.

The goodness of ginger helps protect against heart disease and fight cholesterol too.

Digoxin, a heart medicine, comes from the foxglove plant; Quinine, used to treat malaria, comes from the bark of the Cinchona tree; and, Morphine, the painkiller, comes from the poppy plant.

Although herbal medicines are effective, doctors prefer to stick to the regular medicines because there are many unknown quantities of herbs that still need to be known. Only time and effort will tell how and when the medicinal properties of herbs are fully understood. …

| dentist, health, medicine

While losing all the excess body fat and staying slim forever is everyone's dream. There are still many pieces in the puzzle that we need to fill in. Olive oil is definitely one of those important missing pieces. We all know that in Mediterranean diets it plays an important part. But do you know exactly why is that?

Going back several thousand years ago, in ancient Greece, olive oil was cultivated and used for a variety of reasons. Since then, its use has been taken over all the Mediterranean countries and around the world, continuing to this very day, giving its remarkable health benefits. Most commonly, it is used in cooking, but also in medicines, cosmetics, soaps even as a fuel for old style oil lamps.

The process for making olive oil is very simple; crashing the olives to release the oil inside. It is the king of all oils, because is very high in mono unsaturated fat (up to 80% !!), there is no other oil with such high amount of fatty acids, a super amount of vitamin E, and other powerful antioxidants. In terms of weight loss; 1 tablespoon has around 120 calories, if you eat daily 2-3 tablespoons you can reap all the benefits.

In a report published in the British journal, they found that olive oil could cause a melting of fats in fat cells. In another research made from the American Diabetes Association in Diabetes Care, it shows that it may help in reducing stomach fat and insulin sensitivity.

The health benefits are so many and all very important; because it is made of good fats, not only is cholesterol-free, but also has actually been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and therefore protect from heart disease. In some remote places in the Mediterranean, where people use exclusively in their diet olive oil, they live till very old without any heart problems.

Olive oil may also protect you from diabetes, because it lowers the insulin levels, it can protect you from different types of cancer like skin, breast, or colon cancer. Olive oil also has very powerful anti aging agents; just to get an idea, it is enough to remind you that olive trees are almost immortal, sometimes they can live thousands of years regardless of weather conditions.

There is also the beauty benefit; historical researchers report that man's first use of olive oil was very possibly cosmetic! It can really do wonders in the skin, hair and body !! There are various uses even as a medicine: for the healing of wounds, as a pain reliever with oil massage for the body, for colds and flu symptoms and many more.

Adding olive oil in your diet is an optimum way to start feeling and looking younger and healthier; Simply replace all the hydrogenated oils: margarine, vegetable oil, commercial butters, corn oil, soya oil, and etc, along with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish and meat.

When it comes to the selection, types and …

Patient Centric Digital Health Care Promises More Accessibility and Financially Competence

June 26, 2019
| dentist, health

Health care organizations have received appreciable support from the digital disruptive environment in their quest to deliver value based care as opposed to volume based care.

Digital health care has transformed the way organizations store their patient data, exchange data on-the-go and secure sensitive data. Health care organizations differ in terms of their information storage needs, and the amount and type of data which needs to be stored. Data storage is also dependent on regulatory requirements which an organization must follow.

In this context, more and more care delivery settings realize that in order to succeed, they must view patients as central to their focus rather than as mere stakeholders.

A transition from an organization-centric to a patient-centric approach for storing and handling health data involves efforts at multiple stages, from defragmenting broken silos pf patient data to exchanging meaningful health data through Health Information Exchanges (HIE).

Accessible Health Care with Digital Technologies will Improve Care Delivery

The use of digital technologies and mobile to enable patients in helping find their practitioner and care setting has made care more accessible.

Delivering accessible care in this way can have a number of implications such as ensuring patients receive care at the most cost-effective setting and from the closest physician within their selected radius.

Improving accessibility through digital applications can also enable patients to readily access physician contact information in the event of emergency or even when an appointment is desired, greatly simplify the care delivery process.

Digital Information Sharing Will Help Health Care Organizations Achieve Financial Goals

Cost containment in health systems is the single most pressing concern ever since the Affordable Care Act came into existence. One of the main factors responsible for a consistent increase in health care costs is the way procedures are executed in health delivery settings.

First, the number of procedures performed is generally more intensive than required. Secondly, there is a marked difference between the way procedures are carried out when comparing care delivery from state to state and also between health care organizations within the same state.

Clearly, information transparency imparted through the digital health care revolution will help health care organizations execute procedures in a more prudent manner, curtail over-utilization and cut down costs to help meet financial objectives.

Delivering value based care that is customer centric will empower patients considerably. In the bargain, it will also change the way health delivery organizations will perceive and deliver quality care.…
