The Best Dentures Glue

If you are wearing dentures for the first time right now, or have been a denture wearer for many months or years, I’m sure you have struggled many times to find the answer to the question often asked: “Which is the best denture glue?’ Let me say this at the very start, I have worn a denture ever since I was nine years old and I am now in my eighties. Therefore I’ve had a few years to ponder and search for an answer to that perplexing question.

I would like to give you a short, quick answer, and say: “Do this, or use that” – but I’ve found there is more to the problem than most people realize. The more I think about it the more complicated the answer seems to get. At one time I was so frustrated with denture “glues,” I went directly to my dentist and said point-blank, to him: “Doc, what kind of denture cream or glue do you use with your dentures? What do you think I should use?” He thought for a couple of minutes and replied: “Terry, as a matter of fact, I don’t have dentures, I still have all of my “natural” teeth, so I can’t tell which “glue” is best for you or anyone else to use. My advice is for you to try them all until you find one that meets your needs to make your denture feel: stable, secure and as immovable as possible while you are chewing, talking drinking and sneezing.”

Well, I thought to myself, that was an answer, but not one that helped me at all. I still had the same problem I had before I asked my “expert” dentist for his help.

Of course, my dentist did go on to explain to me, at length, why it was that I might need a “glue” to hold my denture in place. He began by giving me a brief history of dentures and their use from ‘way back in the 1500s to the present time. He told me the first dentures were believed to have been made by the early Etruscans, before the Romans captured them. Those dentures, then called: false teeth were only made for rich people and they were made only for “show” not for eating! Why? Because, back then, there was no good way to hold those false teeth in place while the wearer was eating, chewing, drinking and trying to talk normally with a mouth full of fake teeth.

Much later in history dentists who were then called “tooth barbers” figured out ways to keep false teeth in place using such things as: thread, catgut, and even gold wire. Those wires had to be very carefully put in place. Once the false teeth were wired in place they were not easily taken out. The result was the wearers of those dentures often left them in place too long and the teeth began to smell bad. Another process was to “wedge” the false …

Do-It-Yourself – Deep Cleaning Your Teeth

You make sure that your family has good dental cleaning habits. You brush twice a day, for at least five minutes in scrupulous circles, zoning in on specific geographic regions of the mouth. You floss with the latest, most technologically advanced dental tape. You even buy your family the newest fad in contoured toothbrushes, just to reach those hard-to-get spaces in between.

Now that you’re listening, a qualified dentist or hygienist should do your dental cleaning, preferably every six months. Professional dental cleaning can be broken down into three main subcategories, namely: scaling, root planning, and polishing.

You do your homework, and you provide your children with calcium-rich foods that are not too high in sugars. You stock the pantry with cereals and grains high in B Vitamins. You make consistently sensible food choices, because you know that any foods that augment muscle and bone growth are generally recommended for teeth and gums.

But, no matter how you slice it, the time will come for you and your children to get a professional dental cleaning. While brushing and flossing alone can remove as much as 70% of the plaque on your teeth, the other 30% lurks in areas that are harder to reach, and semiannual cleanings are the most sensible preventive medicine against easily avoidable oral health problems such as bad breath (halitosis), gingivitis, tartar (calculus) buildup, and tooth decay.

The American Dental Association (ADA) used to recommend that a child get their first dental cleaning at the age of three. But the recent wave of cavities in children entering kindergarten has forced the ADA to redefine their guidelines, and now most dentists recommend an initial visit to the dentist shortly after the eruption of the first teeth, which takes place during the first year.

If a child’s teeth are developing normally, this visit can be put off longer. However, if the tendency toward developing cavities is deemed to be genetic, so if the parents have had a history of cavities, it is better to get the child into a dentist earlier, in order to establish a sensible oral hygiene routine. Also, children whose teeth show staining, crowding, or other abnormalities should go to a dentist before the age of three.

Root planning is basically gum work, the cleaning of pockets to prevent further development of periodontal or gum disease. When gums are inflamed, the pockets tend to become deeper, making it much easier for them to trap plaque deposits, further worsening the condition of the gums. Root planning can sometimes be a painful process requiring local anesthesia.

Polishing is the final step of a good dental cleaning. Prophy jet polishing works but spraying powered water mixed with baking soda on the teeth. The powered water helps remove any excess plaque, and the baking soda neutralizes acidic conditions in the mouth while simultaneously fighting stains. Your dentist is equipped with the knowledge and the technology to optimize your own personal dental hygiene program for maximum success. So, please, every six …

Brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash are some of the basics that we need to properly perform daily.

As recommended, it is best to floss at least once a day. This helps in removing food debris that is stuck between the teeth which are difficult to remove by just brushing or gargling with water or mouthwash. So how do you really floss properly?

Here are some steps and points to do this and prevent oral and heart diseases:

1) Do the flossing before brushing your teeth.

2) Use approximately 18 inches or an arm's length of floss and wind each the ends around your middle finger.

3) Hold around a couple of inches of the floss between your thumb and index fingers.

4) Gently insert or slide the dental floss in the gap between the teeth.

5) Make sure you will not snap the floss to prevent irritating the gums.

6) Hold the floss tightly enough as you gently move the floss up and down and make sure to angle it correctly as it forms a letter "c" as it hugs the tooth.

7) You may also make a scressing motion on the inner sides of the tooth to remove debris clinging to that side.

8) Include the sides of the tooth that are even exposures without another tooth beside it. Some foods that are sticky can also easily cling to the tooth surface.

9) There are several types of dental floss available which even includes a plastic handle. So choose a type which can help you maneuvers easily between the teeth and even to the teeth at the far end of your mouth.

10) Floss between all of your teeth and then brush your teeth once done.

So it is not necessary that you wait to remove it by the end of the day. Even gargling with mouthwash is not advisable to be done after every brushing. Brainwash Yourself Into the Exercise Habit

The trick for programming a habit is to reinforce (reward) a good activity, not reward or punish the bad activity (eating junk food). Eventually the mind starts to associate the consequences with the actions. In this case, you do the exercise, you get a reward.

Simple enough, right? But, here is what happens: people will decide that they will take the reward before the exercise. So, after several beers or hours of television, they have lost any incentive that they had to get started. Not many dogs will do a trick after they get a reward. Not many people will work after getting paid.

Behavior conditioning rule #1: The reward comes AFTER the activity.

So, in the case of doing say doing 20 crunches or using the push mower to cut the back lawn, you would reward yourself after the crunches. For instance, after 20 crunches, I would recommend a glass of water or reading the newspaper. (Cutting the back lawn with a push mower earns at least a couple glasses of lemonade.) In my experience, the reward should just be short of total satisfaction.

The reward should not be too over whelming. Not an hour of television, a case of beer or half of a cheese cake. This will set your mind up for failure. Just like a spoiled pet, child, teenager or worker, your mind will tend to wait for the huge reward before doing the slightest bit of initiative.

Now, hearing this sometimes offends people as they do not think that it is very fair. It reminds me of the dieter who gorges on junk on a Wednesday because he or she “was so disciplined” and visited the gym on Monday and Tuesday. That is the wrong reward and the wrong amount.

Even granting large rewards for large efforts has its set backs. Like the lady insists on losing 20-30 pounds and then rewarding themselves with a trip to Mexico or a Liz Clairborne outfit. Each day is like work with no pay. The end seems miles away. In the weight loser’s mind, the dieting and exercise seems like bitter medicine every day. And every day is a small torture session.

Fortunately, there are simpler ways around this goal. For starters, you must go back to the small rewards strategy. In this case of weight-loss, this dieter, could give themselves a mark on the calendar for every day that he/she was true to the diet. Better yet, make that a check mark for every meal that she was true to her diet. There is a greater chance of success with several smaller rewards than a few large ones.

The check marks become the simple reward. Eventually a certain number of check marks, like say, 100, could mean a holiday trip or that fancy outfit. To make it even simpler, every 10 check marks could mean a movie or a visit to a store. 25 check marks could mean a visit to a nice restaurant. The rewards could …

Personal Fitness and You

First off let me tell you that I am not a physical fitness nut, or instructor. In fact, I am about as far from that as one can get. I do believe that keeping your body in shape is a great source of pride and most certainly should add to your longevity.

With that being said, I will admit that I do not pursue that particular way of maintaining my body, or my mind. That's another story in itself. What I would like to share with you are some of my thoughts on how one of the ways being promoted in the physical fitness arena others me.

We are bombarded with ads on TV about the many different styles and types of equipment that can help us maintain our bodies. Everything from the simple to the complex. Since I am not personally using any of these, I am not able to tell if they actually do what they are promoted as being able to do. But, there does seem to be two common areas for all of them.

The first and most profit is that they are all made affordable to us. From the easy one time out of pocket expense, to the extremely reasonable monthly payment plan. This means that in reality, nobody should use the excuse of not being able to afford it! That being said, I do have a slight issue with the second common area.

I know some of you will say I am being a bit picky, but I am on the outside looking in. It seems as though every ad I see has either a woman, or a man, who appears to be in the best shape of their life. I realize that in order to promote the individual product, it sure helps to have a healthy looking man or woman showing you how easy it is, but I wonder how many people are looking at these ads actually see themselves in that light?

I am sure there would be far fewer sales if I was shown using the equipment! After all, who wants to see a regular average Joe with a bit of a pot on TV?

I guess I would just like to see, every once in a while, Joe or Jane average instead of those who look as though they had been continuously working on their bodies for years. For those who do, good for you !! It's just a bit of a stretch for me to even dream that 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week would ever get me looking that good.

If I am wrong, someone, anyone, please ship me one of those puppies so I can start looking like I feel !! …
